Emily Verdoorn Studio

welcome

I am glad you are here.

I am Emily Verdoorn, an artist from Des Moines Iowa, and now living and working in Wheaton, Illinois. Most often, my drawings come from time spent observing the seasons and liturgies of places and spaces, and the natural world around me. As I try to pay attention, I collect marks, textures, patterns, colors, and lines which inform my process. For me making is a process of listening and observing; a quiet conversation seeking the mundane glory in the everyday.

This present mixed media work has been a slow gathering in bits and pieces over the last several years. While they have been in process I have lived in Mississippi, Iowa, Colorado, Texas, and Illinois with two months spent in Missouri and Minnesota as well. These are collections from seasons in the year and seasons in myself. I like to think of them as a sort of palimpsest of marks, images, textures, colors, and materials collected over time from the places I find myself. They are a gradual weaving together -- a kind of web, or nest perhaps.

Until recently these mixed media pieces have come up individually or in small groupings. For the first time enough have come together to form body in company with each other. I am thankful to be able to share this company with you, and grateful for your spending some time with it. It is interesting, however, because opening this work it is not closing a series. Madeline L’Engle talks about the listening to the work we make. I this body of work I find that I am still listening, so thank you for joining me as I listen, and I hope this gives space for you to listen as well.

For as long as I can remember, I have loved drawing and making things. What was unselfconscious play as a child grew into a way of paying attention: to more deeply press into the life of the world around me. I grew up in Des Moines, Iowa, received my BFA at Belhaven University in Jackson, Mississippi, and am now continuing to work and grow in my process in Wheaton, Illinois. Enjoy looking around my online shop. Thank you for stopping by!
